CAR RENTAL CONDITIONS

1. FINDING EACH SUPPLIER RENTAL CONDITIONS

All rental conditions are provided by CarTrawler booking engine technology and can be found during the booking process. Always consult the specific rental conditions relating to your rental quotation. Car hire terms and conditions can differ from car rental agent to car rental agent and vehicle to vehicle. On the quotation page (Step 2) of our booking process you can find each specific rental conditions by clicking the link located next to the car image. You can also find them on the third and final step of the booking process (Step 3) at the bottom of the confirmation page.

2. BOOKING PAYMENTS

There are three types of business payment models when making a booking as described below, depending on each local car hire supplier agent:

  1. You pay a booking deposit at the time of making your booking and the balance is paid to the rental vehicle provider on arrival; or
  2. You pay the entire rental cost of the rental vehicle at the time of making your booking and you only pay for fuel petrol/diesel and optional extras on arrival; or
  3. You pay nothing at the time of making your booking. CarTrawler will make the reservation on your behalf without receiving any money and you will pay the rental vehicle provider the entire cost of the rental vehicle at the time of your arrival.

The payment model for your booking is dependant upon the location and/or rental vehicle provider used and you will be informed of any up front payment prior to completing your booking. The booking engine on this website is VeriSign secured and you can use a credit card or debit card to avail of the introductory service provided by this booking engine. Please note that not all rental vehicle providers will accept debit cards.

Please be also aware that car rental agents require a credit card in the primary driver’s name at time of pick-up. At all times you are responsible for payment of any additional services/costs requested by you and you are responsible for any other service charges applied by said rental vehicle provider.

3. INCLUDED IN RATES

The prices quoted on the website are normally tax inclusive. Please note though, that for some car hire providers, there are exclusions when you receive the quotes on this website. Click ‘rate details’ on Step 2 of the booking process to be 100% sure of what the rate for the car you choose includes. Some optional extras that are listed on the voucher or in the rental conditions may not include tax (VAT). In this case it will be indicated. Please check the rental conditions online or on the rental voucher if you have already made your booking for what taxes are included. Click on the links below to view explanations:

4. OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Extras are not included in the price quoted; they must be paid for on arrival and the respective charges may vary according to the specific car rental supplier. Once the vehicle is confirmed please check your booking voucher for a section which shows the addition extras you have booked. Please note, these extras are only requested and might not be guaranteed or even available for some car rental suppliers:

  • GPS – Satellite Navigational System
  • Infant child seat
  • Child toddler seat
  • Booster seat
  • Luggage rack
  • Ski rack
  • Snow Chains
  • Additional driver
  • Avoid all excess charges

5. CANCELLATION PROCEDURE

Cancellation of a booking must be made a minimum of forty eight (48) hours before the rental of the vehicle is due to commence pursuant to a booking made on this booking engine. If you wish to cancel a booking, the only accepted method is through the CarTrawler Cancellation Process. Do not cancel your booking with the car rental agent directly as additional fees may apply.

Part-paid Rentals

When the booking deposit has been paid online and the balance is due on arrival at the rental desk:

  • If the booking is cancelled within 7 days of the car rental booking date and at least 48 hours before pick up time, all funds will be reimbursed.
  • If the booking is cancelled outside 7 days of the car rental booking date and at least 48 hours before the pickup time, all funds except a cancellation fee of EUR 25.00 and the card processing fee (where applicable), will be reimbursed.
  • If the booking is cancelled less than 48 hours before the pickup time, no funds will be reimbursed.

Pre-paid Rentals

When the entire rental amount has been pre-paid:

  • If the booking is cancelled within 7 days of the car rental booking date and at least 48 hours before pick up time, all funds will be reimbursed.
  • If the booking is cancelled outside 7 days of the car rental booking date and at least 48 hours before the pickup time, all funds except a cancellation fee of EUR 25.00 and the card processing fee (where applicable), will be reimbursed.
  • If the booking is cancelled less than 48 hours before the pickup time, we will retain 3 days rental and the card processing fee (where applicable).

Post-paid Rentals

When the entire rental amount is due on arrival at the rental desk:

  • There is no cancellation fee.

6. EXPLANATION

Below you can find brief descriptions for the basic included in the quotes show on the website during the booking process:

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

This means your liability for damage caused to the rental vehicle is relinquished if it is involved in a collision. The waiver is limited to a certain amount and often excludes tyres, windows, locks and any towing. The waiver usually carries an excess/deductible of a certain amount; this means that the renter will be liable for a certain amount e.g. In Portugal the amount for smaller vehicles is approximately EUR 500 and for bigger vehicles around EUR 1,500.

Vehicle Theft Waiver

This removes or reduces the renter\92s liability for the attempted theft or theft of the rented vehicle. The waiver may carry an excess/deductible amount, which means that the renter will be liable for a certain amount of the value of the vehicle damaged or stolen, for example up to first EUR 2,000 of the damage.

Safety tip: we recommend that you remove the identifying tag that is usually on the key ring of the vehicle and store it safely elsewhere.

If the vehicle is stolen and the renter cannot return the key i.e. the renter was negligent and left the key in a prominent and vulnerable location, the renter may be liable for the full cost of the vehicle.

Liability Insurance

Every country has a minimum amount of insurance needed for someone to be permitted to drive. This covers the renter\92s liability for any damage caused to other people and/or other people\92s property. It is usually limited to a maximum of EUR 1,000,000. The insurance is limited and there may be excess i.e. you may be liable for any amount over and above the value of the insurance.

Premium Location/Airport Fee

These are fees charged at some locations to cover the costs of services in the location.

VAT Local Tax

This is a tax applied by the government on car rental and the percentage (%) varies from country to country.

Road Fund Tax / VLF

This is a charge applied by rental companies to cover the cost of vehicle licensing.

Unlimited Mileage

Unlimited mileage is included in our rates. Many other companies charge this for accelerated vehicle depreciation.
